2024: S4 Professional Practice & the One-Day MBA

During the Professional Practice and the One Day MBA session, scholars will illustrate the connection between the business of architecture and the built environment. The presentations will present a holistic view of the best professional practices; those that allow firms to attract and retain talent, and manage projects effectively and efficiently.

First, scholars will be introduced to basic business concepts, contracts, and legal structures pertinent to the architectural practice. Using his current firm as a case study, the speaker will delve into the intricacies of these business concepts, illustrating their practical significance within the architectural industry. Secondly, scholars will learn about the essential components of successful business development. They will examine strategies and tactics for promoting both personal and firm branding, along with the art of structuring fees to maintain profitability while staying competitive within the market.

During the panel discussion, firm leaders shared perspective representing architecture firms of varying sizes. They addressed the unique challenges associated with leading design firms including shaping firm culture, risk management, fostering growth and innovation, all while ensuring profitability remains a priority. The session will conclude with a presentation highlighting compensation, intended to foster peer discussion and advocate for equity and accountability in these practices within the AEC industry.
