2024: S3 - Tackling Climate Change

Globally, the effects of climate change are becoming readily apparent. Sea levels are rising, record high temperatures are set every year, and extreme weather events are occurring with increasing frequency and intensity. The architecture and construction industry must respond to these challenges to incorporate sustainable design to minimize the effects of climate change. This session will illustrate the role of the architect in the big picture of climate change, identify financial implications of green infrastructure, and review successful design and coordination strategies.

April being the month to be mindful of ways we can help planet Earth, session 3 focused on “Tackling Climate Change”. Scholars Nia Furr and Denise Gravelle, AIA, LEED AP BD+C explored the sustainable design approach by discussing methods and successful case studies that reduce both embodied and operational carbon and create resilience in buildings and public infrastructure. The presentations centered on how the definition of sustainability has evolved, evaluating green policies and incentives have been put in place in the DMV region, and exploring the tools that different disciplines must teach clients and make decisions about sites and materials. The session provided valuable perspective on the challenges faced by architects and encouraged the scholars to consider the opportunities to improve human health and wellbeing through sustainable strategies.
